A New Residents' Association in Levenshulme

Last month, residents of two Levenshulme streets got together and formed The Fairbourne and Molyneux Residents’ Association.

Eager to get started on improving the neighbourhood – extending their invitation to residents of nearby Barlow Road and Dorset Road – they held a meeting on 2nd June, at which there were thirty-three residents plus Councillors Peter Cookson and Julie Reid.

A week later, they held a clean-up and managed to shift bundles of weeds and bags of fly-tipped rubbish from the alleyways.

On 30th June, this new grassroots group will be holding another meeting at St Mark’s Church, where cleanliness and traffic calming will be the likely topics for discussion. If you live on Molyneux, Barlow, Dorset or Fairbourne Roads, go along at 11:00 a.m. to find out what is happening and how you can get involved.

Carrying the Flame in Levenshulme

You may already be aware, from the pre-launch event with former Corrie actor Bruce Jones and scriptwriter Ryan Dior, that the Olympic torch is coming to Levenshulme next Saturday, 23rd June!

The torchbearers for the Levenshulme leg are Pete Morgan, Victoria Kinsley and Simon Chapman, who hail from Stockport, Oldham and Wigan, respectively.

Torchbearers have to be nominated to carry the torch, and these people form a tireless trio worthy of the honour. Simon has been "engaged in the business of sport for a number of years" and is carrying the torch on behalf of Adidas. Pete ran in the Great Manchester 10k and raised £8600 for the Christie Hospital, which went towards a new hospital wing. Nineteen-year-old Vicky is a member of the Oldham Youth Group for young people with visual impairment, and is an inspirational role model to its members.

Whilst none of the Levenshulme torchbearers hails from this part of the A6 corridor, there is one Levy torchbearer who is carrying the flame through Higher Broughton. Brenda Harkin suffered a stroke ten years ago, shortly after setting up a Gaelic Football team (St Mary's Gaelic & Athletic Association) that has achieved some success. Despite being badly affected by the stroke, she turns out, rain and shine, as a coach for the club and encourages young people across Manchester to become involved in sports. She is clearly a Levenshulme community champion - and, fittingly, there will be a special celebration at the St Mary's Parish Centre for Brenda's contribution to this international event.

LEVity - New Comedy Night For Levensulme

Hello, Helen here - remember me?! Well, while Laura and Stuart have been doing
sterling work without me running LoveLev I've been doing all sorts of exciting things (picking fluff out of my belly button, looking for reduced price cans of cider in Tesco - that sort of thing) INCLUDING co-founding LEVity, a new regular comedy night for Levenshulme, which has it's first outing on Sunday 1st July 2012 at the Klondyke Club.

(I'm reliably informed that's the date of the final of Euro 2012 but...well, there you go. I like laughing more than I like football and I'd worry about anyone who'd disagree.)

Tickets are a paltry £3.00 and for that you get six sets from new and established stand-up talent from Manchester and beyond. That's six different kinds of laughing. That's 50p per type of laugh. AND the Klondyke sells lovely cheap beer! I genuinely cannot think of a better way to round off the weekend and banish the MONDAY FEAR. (Actually I can - take Monday off, then you can drink even more lovely beer).

Tickets are on sale now at POD, Trove and online and can be bought on the door and all the info about the acts performing and other...stuff can be found on the LEVity site. And while you're at it, why not follow @LEVitycomedy on Twitter (with the chance to win free tickets until Sunday) or "like" us on Facebook?

Right, that's it from me - hopefully next time I check in it will be in a less self-promote-y capacity. Don't count on it, though. TA-RA!
