Levenshulme Baths & Library.

The future of Levenshulme Swimming baths continues to be a questionable one, the last few years has seen threats of closures and passionate (successful) protests by locals.  The Council says they can’t afford the building’s upkeep and that there is a compelling case to replace the old facility.

Recently the council announced a proposed plan to create a new facility in Levenshulme, encompassing a library and swimming baths.

The full report can be read if you click this link.

The library building is a protected Carnegie building, which means it has historic significance and due to this, there will have to be an appraisal for the future use of the existing library building.  However, there is no mention in the council’s report of the future of the swimming baths building.  The website's 'FAQ' page states "The swimming pool is not being considered for any alternative use once the proposed new facility is open."

There is a survey on the Manchester City Council website, where you can give your opinions and feedback on this.  Resident’s have until Saturday 24 June 2012 to take part in the consultation.  So here is the link, have your say Levenshulme!

Levenshulme Market

Yesterday saw the first of a new Levenshulme market, located on the Station car park.  The sun was shining and the crowds gathered, it seemed like a really successful day.

There were cakes a plenty, local artwork, all kinds of food, antiques and vintage clothing, to name but a few stalls on offer.  I loved it, can't wait for next month's on the 23rd June!

Market organiser and occasional Love Levenshulme contributor  Cormac Lawler was there promoting the Levy Time Bank.  Timebanking is a way of offering your time and skills in exchange for someone else's- a great way for us all to help each other out.  To find out more, check out the facebook page.

Cormac was also involved in the Levenshulme Portas Pilot video.  The news was announced this week that although our neighbour Stockport will benefit from the scheme as one of the 12 towns chosen to receive the £100,000 funding, Levenshulme wasn't successful this time.  However,  all is not lost, as there will be a 'round 2' of towns selected, so let's keep our fingers crossed for that one.

60 Drawings at Bankley Studios

A new exhibition is starting at Bankley studios next week.

60 Artists have been asked to submit one drawing in an exhibition that lays bare the tradition of drawing in individual contemporary practices. With the democracy of open submission, '60 Drawings' is curated by Carolyn Curtis Magri and Gary James Williams and intends to explore, define and celebrate the locality and discipline of drawing in its diverse forms within the practices of participating artists.

Levenshulme Market, Saturday 26th May!

Levenshulme is celebrating the start of a new Market, on the Station Car Park this Saturday (26th May). The market will take place on the 4th Saturday of every month, from 9am-4pm. The organisers (a partnership of Manchester Markets and Levenshulme traders, community groups and locals) hope that it will really reflect the diversity and community of Levenshulme, and a host of locals have already booked their place.

It's still possible to book a stall at the market - but please put your name down asap! Details for how to do so are at the links below. Manchester Markets will provide a gazebo, two tables, and electricity to every trader, and public liability insurance is covered too.

For more information about visiting or taking part, go to levymarket.co.uk. There's also a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

Are you setting up a stall at the market on Saturday?  We'd love to know what you have planned!  Contact us via email or twitter.

See you at the market on Saturday!

PS.  There seems to be some confusion, as people have been looking at the 2011 blog posts about the then Market, and getting they're dates confused.  For those of you who did, it is this Saturday!!  Not a Friday.  Also, will be in the year 2012!
