As the daylight begins its stretch into early evening, you know that spring is on its way. I don’t know about you, but that always makes me want to go out and do something fun. If only it weren’t so cold, especially in the morning! (That said, the frost on Greenbank Playing Fields is certainly a pretty sight and the dog loves to roll around on it.) As the rays of sunshine extend, I think of evenings filled with music and laughter, interesting places to visit, things to see, things to do.
In one month’s time – and this is, of course, a short month, so there’s not long to go – the sun will set a few minutes before 6pm and the traders will be dismantling their stalls after the first of four days’ trading in the Manchester Irish Market in Albert Square. That’s right – it’s time for this year’s Manchester Irish Festival!
The festival runs from from Friday 2nd March to Sunday 18th March and is of particular interest to Levenshulme, given that quite a number of its residents are Irish or have some Irish ancestry (myself included). This is reflected in the fact that, of the nearly eighty venues running Irish Festival events across Manchester and nearby towns such as Stockport, Altrincham and Oldham, thirteen are in Levenshulme!
In addition to ALL FM -- which regularly features the “Full Irish” show on Sunday afternoons -- Levy people will be spoilt for choice at the following places:
The Energy Box Sports Centre at Levenshulme High School
Hennigan’s Sports Bar
Sacred Heart Church Social Centre
St Mary’s Church
St Mary’s Parish Centre
St Peter’s Church
There is something for everyone at the Manchester Irish Festival. Whether you’re into playing darts, photographs of Mayo, Irish films or an all day party on St. Patrick’s Day (and, let’s face it, who isn’t?), you’ll have a great time in Levenshulme.
I hope to catch a few events myself. Even if my co-editor and I are only able to make it to a few of the exciting things going on, we will make sure we write about them – and we’ll certainly make sure you’re kept up to date with what’s planned each day.
See you there!
