The driving philosophy of lovelevenshulme is to be positive about the place we live in. Helen and myself decided that we would not write anything negative. So if you want this to remain a purely positive blog then please look away now!!Levenshulme Swimming Pool and Arcadia Leisure Centre are being cut by Manchester City Council. My family and I are regular users of the swimming pool and the kids love it so obviously I am a little disappointed.
Please read the following from Friends of Levenshulme -
This news will have the most awful repercussions for our community and we will have to work together to prevent this from going ahead. We can only make a difference, together. Meet on Friday at 5 p.m. at Levenshulme Inspire in the cafe area to discuss a plan of action. Meanwhile, urgently invite your contacts to the Facebook group 'Fight for Levenshulme Baths' to keep up to date and show support.
Arcadia
The Arcadia is the most fantastic community resource where Levenshulmers of all ages come together to rollerskate. The facility urgently requires a few repairs to the roof which has leaked since it was installed. It also requires a cafe area as there is currently no space to sit or for children to pick up a cheap snack. The Arcadia will be applying for planning permission to add some space to the building to accommodate a much needed cafe area.
1 Minute of your time required! Please reply to this message saying that you support the repairs and planning permission that our very own Arcadia requires urgently.

i don't think arcadia is being cut - although i think they are changing the way its managed if you look at the cuts document on the council website - it looks like the mention in the Friends email you quote is just an appeal to support the work they want done on the building
I support both the baths and the arcadia, they are a valuable community resource and bring oy, enrichment and pleasure to those is levenshulme and beyond. please dont close them
I support the plans for a cafe etc but more importantly would urge the Council not to get rid of such a valuable resource as the Arcadia!
I support the plans to improve the Arcadia and wholeheartedly oppose any short-sighted Council plans to close it. It's an invaluable resource to the local community as well as a hotbed of talent in the form of the roller hockey club, who play top division league matches there, and the roller derby teams that practice and play there.
I support the repairs and planning permission that the Arcadia requires.
In the words of @manchesterchimp
"Rejoice! Facilities in middle class areas largely spared the axe in MCC response to government cuts http://ow.ly/3Sett"
Also, this is an important read - bit technical, but you can get the gist. The closing paragraph is particularly relevant.

The Arcadia is used regularly by myself & a very large group of friends, it is a fantastic community resource dedicated to getting people of all ages active. I believe it would be devastating to the local community if it closed or didnt get the repairs it deserves. Both the Arcadia & Levenshulme Baths are steeped in history, the leisure centre is one of the oldest in the UK; with Charlie Chaplin & Stan Laurell having skated there!
Please be aware that it is not just Levenshulme folks that enjoy Arcadia. It travel 35 miles each way several times a week to train with Manchester Roller Hockey Club and Manchester Roller Derby, both of whom consider Arcadia to be their home.
As for the roof leaking, the roof was installed only a couple of years ago, and has never been right. Surely the contractors who did this work should return to put right their faulty workmanship.
I can't find the Fight for Levenshulme Baths page on Facebook... Any help?
I can't find the FB page either...
I love spending time at Arcadia, have made some great friends and really enjoy skating there. It is a fantastic resource and even has activities for children in the week. It would break my heart if my family and I can't continue to use this fabulous centre.
Thanks for putting word out about the baths. There will be a petition outside of tescoes at 12 pm on Saturday; a quickly arranged thing by residents!
I can't find the facebook page either. Please can you post a link. Thanks!
I cannot find that facebook group either! As soon as it exists then we shall post it and tweet it.
Hi this may be a tad late but here's a link to the fb page.

hope it works!
Thanks all for your comments, sorry I was a bit late with the Facebook link. I've now posted a summary of everything that's transpired today.
While Arcadia has not been specifically earmarked for closure, the work that is needed to the centre is essential so if it doesn't go ahead it is very likely it will have to close. I'm going to try and get in touch with the Centre over the next few days to get more detail and will let you know what I find.
Helen
I agree completely with all the comments people are leaving. As Darren says it's not just the people of Levenshulme that benfit from the Arcardia, I would say this is a valuable resource for Greater Manchester as a whole.
The Arcadia is amazing centre bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds promoting a true sense of community spirit. Please save Levenshulme baths and the Arcadia!
I echo the sentiments of everyone else. These facilties shouldn't be closing. Going to the arcadia is really helping me get more active.
I can't even see how all the groups displaced would be able to be accomodated at other public facilties.
I DEFINITELY support the repairs to Arcadia - I haven't got round to doing the roller derby there yet! There's hardly any rollerskatey places around these days, which makes it even more special!
I hear that the meeting at Inspire was well attended and passionate. Let's work to keep the pool and Arcadia open to the public. No formal decisions have been taken yet, it's just plans - open to consultation. We need to think about lobbying the scrutiny committee. I could not get there today as not very well but thanks to everyone for your efforts.
